EMDR Therapy in Boston

Recognize and change the negative responses that keep you in the "there and then" while moving into the "here and now."

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapeutic approach that focuses on the brain's natural ability to learn, modify, and adapt. When a distressing past event occurs, the memory is stored with an 'emotional charge.' When similar emotions are triggered in the present, the negatively charged feelings of the past distort our perception of ourselves and how we respond to situations. For example, if you receive a critical review of your work performance, you may know you are worthwhile, but the negative emotions and beliefs of the past cause you to feel worthless.

How Does EMDR Work?

EMDR utilizes the technique of 'bilateral stimulation' to help activate your brain's natural healing process. By reprocessing distressing memories in a safe and structured manner, EMDR aims to reduce emotional reactivity and promote more helpful beliefs and behaviors. As a result, we don't just think we are better - we feel it too!

Who can EMDR help?

In addition to trauma, EMDR has been shown to be an effective treatment for a variety of mental health issues - including anxiety, depression, grief/loss, addiction, and performance anxiety. EMDR may be used within a standard talk therapy session, as an adjunctive therapy with a separate therapist, or as a treatment all on its own.
